Two Years Without a Full-Time Role: A Project Manager's Search

Fatema Ali, a former IBM project manager based in Texas, has spent over two years navigating a grueling job hunt. Following her 2024 layoff, she balanced the sudden loss of her household income with the pressure of maintaining a sense of normalcy for her three children while testing the volatile modern labor market.

The search for employment has proven more daunting than the climate she encountered during the 2008 Great Recession. Ali describes a landscape dominated by applicant tracking systems that often filter out qualified candidates before a human recruiter ever reviews their experience. To bypass these digital gatekeepers, she has shifted her focus toward networking and direct referrals, finding that cold applications rarely yield results in a market where companies often prioritize internal candidates or hyper-specific skill sets.

Financial stability became a central concern when her husband simultaneously left his job to pursue a startup. Although owning their home provided a critical safety net, the family relied on savings and severance to manage daily expenses. The experience eventually pushed them toward entrepreneurship; they recently launched P1loop, an app designed for team communication. While Ali remains committed to finding a traditional role in project management or the nonprofit sector, the prolonged search has forced her to redefine her perspective on stability and the resilience required to manage career transitions while raising a family.
