Starting Over at 31: Why I Traded My Career for an Unpaid Internship

In April 2025, Jackie Garcia-Morales walked away from a stable publishing job, acting on a gut instinct that proved prophetic when her former company folded shortly after. Facing a frozen job market and mounting uncertainty, the 31-year-old made a radical pivot: she entered the industry as an unpaid intern.

The transition was far from seamless. While her peers were just beginning their professional lives, Garcia-Morales found herself significantly older than her cohort, balancing the role with seasonal gigs and freelance work to cover her expenses. Yet, the experience offered an unexpected perspective. Observing the emotional openness and curiosity of her younger colleagues, she realized how guarded she had become after years in conventional corporate environments. This shift in mindset became her greatest asset when she began navigating the job market again.

Rather than relying on automated applications, she turned her intern status into a tool for direct engagement. Over two months, she reached out to 145 industry professionals, conducting more than 80 networking calls. By treating these conversations as peer-to-peer exchanges rather than standard interviews, she bypassed the traditional hiring gatekeepers. This strategy ultimately yielded multiple job offers, none of which came from formal applications. By 2026, she secured a position as a literary agent, proving that intentional networking can dismantle the barriers of a stagnant job market.
