Hungary Seeks Withdrawal of European Parliament Lawsuit Over EU Funds

Standing in Brussels at his first EU summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar plans to urge the European Parliament to drop its 2024 lawsuit against the European Commission, arguing that the legal challenge threatens the release of vital financial aid intended for his citizens.

The European Parliament initiated the legal action last year following the Commission’s decision to unblock 10.2 billion euros for Budapest. Critics at the time alleged the funds were released to persuade the previous administration to lift its veto on 50 billion euros in aid for Ukraine. While the Commission maintains the two issues were unrelated, the ongoing litigation has created uncertainty regarding the flow of capital.

Magyar, who unseated long-time leader Viktor Orban in April, views securing these frozen assets as a cornerstone of his economic agenda. His administration aims to unlock a total of 16.4 billion euros in recovery and cohesion funds, provided the government honors its reform pledges. With the Hungarian economy stagnating after three years, the Prime Minister is pushing for the suspension of proceedings to ensure the country can finally access the resources necessary to jumpstart financial growth in the fourth quarter.
