Nick Furneaux is a cybersecurity and forensics consultant who specialises in cryptocurrency investigations. He currently works as aBlockchain IntelligenceExpert and Master Trainer atTRM Labsand serves as an advisor to the board at Asset Reality. Furneaux has over 30 years of experience in IT and communications, with 20 years focused on computer security and forensics. Throughout his career, he has worked on high-profile investigations involving fraud, terrorism, and child protection, consulting for corporate clients and law enforcement agencies across the UK, Europe, Asia, and the USA.
Nick is the author of two books on cryptocurrency investigations. His first book,Investigating Cryptocurrencies: Understanding, Extracting, and Analysing Blockchain Evidence, was published in 2018 and remains a key reference for investigators working with blockchain technology. His latest book,There’s No Such Thing as Crypto Crime: An Investigative Handbook, is set to be published in 2024. It covers essential techniques for investigating crimes involving cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains, and provides insights into tracing transactions through contracts, coin swaps, and decentralised finance.
Nick’s expertise also extends to live data acquisition, forensic analysis of volatile data such as RAM, and covert investigation techniques. He is a regular conference speaker at events like SOCEX and ACFE and has contributed to several other books and journals on forensics and cybersecurity. He is passionate about training and has taught thousands of investigators worldwide in areas such as RAM analysis, open-source investigations, and cryptocurrency forensics.
