Stephen Schwarzman

Stephen Allen Schwarzman is the chairman, CEO, and co-founder ofBlackstone Group, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, managing over $1 trillion in assets as of September 2024. Since founding the firm in 1985 with Peter G. Peterson, Schwarzman has played a critical role in its growth from a boutique advisorybusinessto a global leader in private equity, real estate, credit, and alternative investments. Blackstone is recognised for its significant investments across various sectors and its influence in the financial world.

Schwarzman’s leadership extends beyond business into political and economic discussions. He chaired PresidentDonald Trump’s Strategicand Policy Forum in 2017, advising on economic growth and job creation. Although he supported Republican candidates and policies, he later distanced himself from certain actions of the Trump administration.

As of December 2024, his net worth is estimated at $53.3 billion, making him one of the richest individuals in the world. Schwarzman has also established himself as a leading philanthropist. His notable contributions include £150 million to theUniversity of Oxfordfor the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, $350 million to establish the Schwarzman College of Computing at MIT, and $150 million to Yale University for the Schwarzman Centre.

TheSchwarzman ScholarsProgramme, established by Stephen A. Schwarzman in 2013, is a global scholarship initiative designed to prepare future leaders to address the challenges of the 21st century. Based atTsinghua University in Beijing, the program offers a one-year master’s degree in Global Affairs, focusing on China’s role in the evolving geopolitical landscape. Modelled after the Rhodes Scholarship, it selects up to 200 scholars annually from around the world, providing an immersive experience that combines academics, cultural exchange, and leadership development.

Schwarzman is the author of the bestselling bookWhat It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence. His achievements have earned him prestigious honours such as the French Legion of Honour, the Order of the Aztec Eagle, and an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Born in Philadelphia in 1947, Schwarzman attended Yale University, where he earned a BA in 1969, and later received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1972.
