Beyond the Screen: What Tech Workers Actually Do

The popular image of a tech career—a hoodie-clad coder typing in isolation—is increasingly disconnected from the reality of the industry. Professionals at firms like Amazon, Google, and Snap argue that the day-to-day work is defined less by syntax and more by complex communication, intense pressure, and critical human decision-making.

Priyanka Devi Ramesh, a business intelligence engineer at Amazon, notes that her role is rarely about writing code in a vacuum. Instead, she spends her time cleaning data and translating technical findings into narratives for stakeholders. This cross-functional nature is echoed by Sreeja Apparaju, a machine learning engineer at Snap, who emphasizes that the industry's much-discussed perks are offset by the intensity of launch crunches and the constant need to navigate human relationships to ensure project success.

Even as AI tools proliferate, the expectations for employees have shifted rather than diminished. Udit Mehrotra, a head of product at Amazon, warns that relying on AI to do the heavy lifting is a trap; the quality of output remains tethered to the quality of human input. Mike Kostersitz, a senior director at Nike, adds that AI has not created a life of leisure. Instead, it has stripped away repetitive tasks to force professionals into higher-level decision-making, effectively raising the bar for performance rather than lowering the workload.

Finally, the industry is far broader than the software engineering roles that dominate the public consciousness. Security engineers like Google’s Prerit Pathak highlight the importance of diverse roles, from cybersecurity to UI/UX design. Furthermore, Iren Azra Zou, an engineer at the startup Double Nickel, points out that the obsession with Big Tech companies often blinds professionals to the meaningful, high-impact work available at smaller, agile firms.
