From a messy kitchen to a $250 million pet food brand

When Lucy Postins began cooking raw meals in her kitchen to cure her dog’s persistent ear infections, she didn't intend to build a corporate empire. Yet, that home-brewed solution for her pet, Mosi, eventually evolved into The Honest Kitchen, a company now valued at a quarter-billion dollars.

The transition from a hobbyist cook to a CEO began in 2001. Frustrated by the mess of raw feeding, Postins pivoted to dehydrated, human-grade dog food. Her first sale arrived before she even secured a shipping account, signaling an immediate market demand. By 2002, The Honest Kitchen was officially operational, growing alongside her young family. The balance between motherhood and scaling a business proved intense, reaching a breaking point when her daughter pleaded for a moratorium on dog food discussions at the dinner table.

In 2011, the company secured outside investment, marking a pivotal moment of validation. However, as the business matured, so did Postins' priorities. Recognizing that her children were growing up, she stepped down as CEO to become the company’s Chief Integrity Officer. In this role, she shifted her focus from daily operations to maintaining the brand's ethical standards—a job that occasionally requires her to sample the product herself. Today, reflecting on her journey from London to a successful American entrepreneur, Postins credits the U.S. culture of celebrating success for her ability to build a team of 69 employees, even while navigating the inherent isolation that comes with founding a business.
