Why Anthropic is Killing the Traditional Coding Interview

Felix Rieseberg, an engineering manager at Anthropic, has officially abandoned the standard coding interview, declaring the practice obsolete for identifying top-tier talent. As AI models like Claude now outperform humans on technical syntax and logic puzzles, Rieseberg argues that traditional assessment methods no longer signal professional success.

Rieseberg noted that while coding challenges once served as a functional barometer for engineering aptitude, the most impactful builders on his team are rarely the candidates who excel at rote programming tasks. Instead, he observes that newer engineers often outpace seasoned veterans by leveraging AI tools to drive results, proving that hunger and adaptability currently outweigh tenure. This shift mirrors broader industry trends, with companies like Google incorporating AI-assisted assessments into their own hiring loops to test for prompting fluency and machine-human collaboration.

For junior developers concerned about the automation of entry-level tasks, Rieseberg suggests a change in strategy: move beyond clearing backlogs. He advises candidates to identify core business problems and develop a single, functional prototype that demonstrates real-world utility. By showcasing taste and principled thinking through these small-scale projects, applicants can highlight the human judgment that remains essential even as AI assumes the burden of writing code. For now, Rieseberg evaluates candidates based on these portfolios, prioritizing those who demonstrate empathy and the ability to challenge existing product assumptions.
