Senator Wyden Demands Federal Probe Into Banks’ Ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden has called for a federal investigation into JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America, alleging the institutions failed to report suspicious financial transactions linked to Jeffrey Epstein. His four-year inquiry suggests these banks may have breached anti-money laundering laws during their long-standing business relationships with the sex offender.

The report details massive, unreported transfers, including $170 million processed by Bank of America that the bank later admitted lacked a verifiable business purpose. Deutsche Bank allegedly failed to flag over $250 million in wire transfers, some directed to women in Russia and Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Wyden claims JPMorgan delayed reporting more than $1 billion in suspicious activity to the Treasury Department.

Representatives for the banks pushed back against the allegations. A JPMorgan spokesperson called the report’s claims regarding their oversight false, asserting the bank began flagging suspicious transactions as early as 2002 and continued monitoring even after severing ties with Epstein in 2013. Bank of America and Deutsche Bank reiterated their commitment to regulatory compliance, with the latter expressing regret over its historical connection to the financier. Epstein, who was a client of JPMorgan until 2013 and later moved to Deutsche Bank, died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
