From Oil Fields to Nonprofits: A Caregiver's Career Reinvention

When Natasya Pawanteh left her high-pressure role as a geologist at Shell in 2018, she intended to take two years off to care for her ailing parents in Malaysia. That temporary pause stretched into seven years, ultimately dismantling her professional identity and forcing a complete reconstruction of her life’s purpose.

For nearly a decade, Pawanteh lived in a state of professional limbo. While she initially viewed her sabbatical as a short-term hiatus, the reality of managing her parents' health became a full-time, round-the-clock commitment that lasted until their passing in 2024. During this period, she grappled with the loss of her corporate status and the fear that her intellect was stagnating outside the industry’s high-stakes environment.

Returning to geology proved impossible; the gap in her resume and the shift in her own priorities made re-entry an uphill battle. However, a chance encounter while volunteering at the Kechara Soup Kitchen Society shifted her trajectory. The empathy she developed during her years as a caregiver became her most valuable asset, rather than a professional liability. Today, as an assistant to the general manager at the nonprofit, she finds that her experience in logistical planning and stakeholder management—honed during her time at Shell—now serves a more human-centric mission. Pawanteh views her years of caregiving not as a career sacrifice, but as the most significant achievement of her life, proving that a professional pivot can often be a necessary evolution of the self.
