Adam Mosseri Defends Office Shorts as Workplace Norms Shift

As summer temperatures climb, the long-standing debate over corporate dress codes has reached the executive offices of Instagram. Adam Mosseri, the platform's head, has officially endorsed the inclusion of shorts in the workplace, provided they meet a certain standard of style and fit.

On the podcast Throwing Fits, Mosseri admitted the topic remains a point of contention among his team. While he supports the relaxed attire, he acknowledged that not all garments are appropriate for a professional setting, noting that when an outfit fails to land, the result is decidedly lackluster. His stance highlights a broader cultural evolution within the tech industry, where the rigid suit-and-tie expectations of the past have largely dissolved.

The pandemic accelerated this shift, as remote work rendered traditional dress codes irrelevant. What began as a necessity for Zoom-era comfort has transitioned into a permanent fixture of office life. Data from a 2023 Wall Street Journal survey reflects this generational divide: 75% of millennials approve of shorts in the office, while a majority of baby boomers maintain that the practice is unacceptable. For Instagram, which operates with a distinct focus on lifestyle and fashion, the relaxed approach aligns with its brand identity. Mosseri noted that upon joining the company in 2018, he felt a clear pressure to elevate his own wardrobe to match the stylish standards set by his colleagues.
