After two decades engineering chips across the US, Europe, and South Korea, Intel Foundry’s Myung-hee Na has identified a fundamental divide in workplace culture: while American environments prioritize independent thinking and disruptive innovation, their Korean counterparts excel in disciplined execution and manufacturing precision.

Na, who currently leads technology research at Intel, spent 18 years at IBM before working in Belgium and at SK Hynix. She notes that while the physics of semiconductors remain constant regardless of geography, the cultural approach to solving problems varies significantly. In the US, the education system and professional environment encourage challenging assumptions, a trait she finds essential for the long-term research her team conducts. At Intel, where the goal is to define technologies five to 10 years ahead of production, this appetite for unconventional thinking allows engineers to explore millions of experimental combinations.

Conversely, Na points to the strengths of the Korean model, which emphasizes standardization and execution. In an industry where success relies on thousands of precise manufacturing steps, this disciplined consistency is vital to ensuring that laboratory breakthroughs become reliable, scalable products. Na argues that the semiconductor industry requires both mindsets to function effectively. Ultimately, she believes the greatest breakthroughs occur at the intersection of these perspectives, where diverse backgrounds and opposing ways of thinking collide to reveal solutions that a homogenous team might never reach. As AI accelerates the pace of development, she views this cross-pollination of global working styles as the primary engine for future progress.
