Falling Danube levels threaten Romania's final nuclear reactor

The Danube has hit a historic low of 1,370 cubic meters per second at the Romanian border, forcing state operator Nuclearelectrica to prepare for the shutdown of its last operational nuclear reactor. With one unit already offline since July, the potential loss of the second would cripple 20% of national power.

Engineers have exhausted traditional interventions to sustain the Cernavoda plant’s cooling systems. Efforts to salvage water flow included dredging the riverbed, sinking rock-filled barges to redirect the current, and even detonating underwater rock obstructions. Despite these measures, state water management officials now describe the shutdown as unavoidable as the drought persists.

Romania is already operating under an energy emergency for the month of August. Authorities have requested voluntary consumption cuts from households and drafted contingency plans to force industrial power shedding if the grid reaches a breaking point. While neighboring Hungary recently resumed turbine operations at its Paks facility due to local water level improvements, Romanian officials note that upstream rainfall will provide no relief for their downstream section of the river, leaving the country at the mercy of the receding water.
