Cayman Islands mark historic 3x3 basketball debut in Glasgow

The Cayman Islands made a landmark entry into the Commonwealth Games 3x3 basketball arena this week, marking the first time the nation has fielded both men’s and women’s squads in the discipline. Competing at the Scottish Event Campus, the teams faced a steep learning curve against established international powerhouses.

While the Cayman Islands has participated in the Commonwealth Games since 1978, the 3x3 format remained elusive until the field expansion at Glasgow 2026. The tournament grew from eight to 12 teams per gender, providing an opening for the Cayman squads to test their mettle on a global stage. The men’s roster, featuring Brad Lansdell, Bryan Ebanks-Perez, Alwin Buttrum Jr and Nathaniel Hurlston-Anderson, faced a rigorous Group A schedule. Their campaign opened with a hard-fought 21–17 loss to Nigeria, followed by encounters with Scotland, Guyana, New Zealand and Australia. Despite the 0–5 record, the four-point margin against Nigeria highlighted their competitive spirit in the fast-paced, single-hoop format.

The women’s team, comprised of Courtisha Ebanks, Jamie Rankin-Maize, Lyandrea Watson and Khailan O’Connor, mirrored this experience in Group A. Their performance against Fiji showcased defensive resilience, keeping the score tight at 11–6 deep into the second half before Fiji pulled away. Subsequent losses to Uganda, Jamaica, Australia and Kenya concluded their run, with Ebanks notably leading the effort before a late-tournament injury. Although neither squad advanced past the pool stage, their presence signifies a shift in the country's sporting trajectory as the 3x3 discipline continues its rapid expansion following its Tokyo 2020 Olympic debut.
