From stroke patient to $75 million startup founder

A medical school student’s near-fatal stroke at 24 became the catalyst for Happy Health, a venture now armed with $75 million in funding. Dustin Freckleton transformed his personal diagnosis of sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation into an AI-driven smart ring platform designed to bridge the gap between tracking symptoms and clinical treatment.

The company emerged from stealth this week, backed by investors including ARCH Venture Partners and OpenLoop. While many wearables focus on the quantified self, Freckleton distinguishes his startup by offering a full-cycle care ecosystem. Users receive the smart ring to collect biometric sleep data, but the service extends to an internal physician network that can diagnose conditions and prescribe medical interventions like CPAP machines.

Happy Health operates on a $396 price point, which covers the hardware, a year of tracking, and professional consultations, with many insurance plans covering the cost. By targeting sleep apnea as a primary entry point, the startup addresses a chronic issue frequently linked to heart disease and diabetes. Although Freckleton declined to share current revenue figures, he confirmed that tens of thousands of users have already integrated the platform into their health routines. The company plans to expand its diagnostic capabilities to monitor additional conditions, moving beyond simple data collection toward active medical management.
