Sweating with the CEO: How to Navigate the New Corporate Gym Culture

Post-work happy hours are losing their luster as corporate culture shifts toward the gym. For employees, a sunrise HIIT session or a padel match with a manager is no longer just a workout—it is an increasingly common opportunity to build professional rapport and demonstrate drive in a high-stakes environment.

The trend of 'longevity fitness' has turned physical performance into a new professional currency. CEOs like Syndio’s Maria Colacurcio, a competitive Hyrox athlete, argue that speaking the language of resistance training and VO2 max can grant employees access to a level of respect that traditional office interactions often fail to unlock. However, the stakes are high: a networking workout can backfire if an employee overstates their abilities or fails to read the room.

Experts suggest that preparation is the primary hedge against awkwardness. Knowing the class format and your own physical limits is essential, as is avoiding the trap of trying to outperform your supervisor. Noah Neiman, cofounder of the fitness studio The Pack, warns that overt competitiveness can come across as sycophantic. Instead, successful participants mirror their manager’s intensity while remaining focused on personal improvement rather than winning. Etiquette professionals, such as Diane Gottsman of The Protocol School of Texas, advise keeping business talk off the table unless the manager initiates it. If the prospect of a high-intensity session causes anxiety, experts suggest proposing a different activity entirely. The goal remains relational, not transactional, and forcing a workout that does not suit your personality is unlikely to serve your long-term career prospects.
