From Hotel Director to Waitress: A Career Pivot for Balance

After a decade climbing the luxury hospitality ladder, Lisa Eder walked away from her role as a high-end hotel director. Following a move from Austria to Australia, she traded the high-pressure environment of leading 100 staff members for the relative simplicity of a café job, searching for a life defined by personal time.

For years, Eder thrived on the intensity of the corporate world, managing VIP arrivals and high-profile events with 12-hour shifts. The job functioned as her entire identity until the relocation to Sydney in early 2024 shifted her perspective. Observing the local emphasis on work-life balance prompted her to question whether her professional achievements still aligned with her personal values.

Resigning in March 2026 was not a simple exit. Eder struggled with the loss of her professional title and the sudden lack of corporate structure. To bridge the gap, she took a part-time waitressing position. The role provided a surprising mental reset, allowing her to disconnect completely at the end of every shift. This newfound autonomy led her to rediscover past interests like volleyball and running, and she is currently training to become a Pilates instructor. While she acknowledges the uncertainty of her new path, Eder maintains that the trade-off—exchanging a high-status career for the capacity to pursue her own values—has been transformative.
