Silicon Valley's Newest Insult: LARPing

The startup world has a new pejorative for founders who prioritize personal branding over product development: LARPer. Once confined to fantasy enthusiasts, the acronym for "live action role play" now targets entrepreneurs who treat company building as a performance art rather than a rigorous pursuit of customer value.

Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan has become a vocal critic of the trend, urging founders to remain earnest rather than performative. The concern is that the rise of the founder-influencer has blurred the lines between genuine marketing and "grindslop," a term used to describe hollow content about hustle culture. Des Traynor, cofounder of Intercom, recently warned that young entrepreneurs are wasting their potential by prioritizing social media followings over actual business milestones.

Critics of the phenomenon point to specific behaviors as hallmarks of the LARPing founder: excessive screen time on X, sleeping on office floors for optics, and reciting Paul Graham essays as gospel. While some observers, including Graham himself, suggest that such posturing is often indistinguishable from simple inexperience, others argue the current AI-driven market boom has created an environment where performative status-seeking is easier than ever. As product designer Alec Freese noted, many individuals currently masquerading as founders would be more accurately described as content creators.
