Why the Corporate Ladder is Evolving into a Lattice

The traditional climb from junior to executive is losing its dominance as employees increasingly pivot toward fluid, sideways job moves. According to a global survey by Korn Ferry, 64% of leaders expect linear paths to become less common, prioritizing skill acquisition over rigid tenure or predefined titles.

Modern career progression is shifting toward a lattice structure, where growth is defined by lateral transitions rather than simple vertical movement. Professionals are now swapping departments or taking on new roles to sharpen their expertise, a trend driven by the rising demand for adaptability. Data shows 85% of leaders believe future advancement will hinge on specific capabilities rather than job titles, as workers seek to fill gaps in their skill sets before pursuing higher-level responsibilities.

Cathleen Beetel, a senior partner at Korn Ferry, suggests that these moves should not be viewed as stagnation. Instead, they serve as a strategic route to gain adjacent skills that ultimately accelerate long-term promotion potential. Companies benefit from this model by retaining vetted talent, while employees gain greater control over their professional trajectory. However, success depends on transparent communication; workers are more likely to embrace a shift if they understand how the new role contributes to their development rather than simply serving immediate business needs.
