Jensen Huang’s Unfiltered Exit Interviews

When David Hoeller and Nikita Rudin called Jensen Huang to announce their departure from Nvidia, they expected a standard goodbye. Instead, the CEO critiqued their startup’s name, warned of the grueling road ahead, and ultimately shaped the trajectory of their new venture, Flexion Robotics, with his trademark bluntness.

Huang’s parting counsel reflects the culture he enforces at the chip giant, where he frequently bypasses management layers to weigh in on everything from technical output to professional shortcomings. For Hoeller and Rudin, the feedback was practical: Huang dismissed their original company name, Checkpoint, as ill-suited for the industry, prompting a rebrand. The relationship remained productive, with Nvidia later investing in the Zurich-based startup as it expanded into the U.S. with over $57 million in funding.

For others, the feedback cuts deeper into personal development. Bing Xu, who left Nvidia to launch the AI software firm INT21, spent two hours with Huang discussing his future. Rather than simply accepting the resignation, Huang identified communication as Xu’s primary professional hurdle, warning that his tendency to assume shared technical knowledge would limit his potential. Beyond the critique, Huang offered personal health advice, urging Xu to rest amid mounting stress. Both sets of founders frame these interactions not as corporate obstruction, but as a rare, honest assessment from a leader invested in their long-term success.
