The Retirement Gap: A Job Seeker’s Fight Against Age and Debt

Thomas Heep, a 60-year-old operations manager from Denver, faces a stark reality: after being laid off in April 2025, he has been forced to navigate Chapter 7 bankruptcy and early Social Security withdrawal while struggling to secure even entry-level work in a job market he describes as fundamentally broken.

The transition from a career professional to a part-time prescription delivery driver has left Heep feeling as though he is starting from zero. His daily routine now consists of submitting applications to black-hole portals where hundreds, sometimes thousands, of candidates compete for single positions. Despite his years of experience, Heep suspects his age is a silent disqualifier, a hurdle he cannot easily hide during in-person interviews where employers openly question his physical stamina and long-term commitment.

Financial survival has become a precarious balancing act. Because Heep began drawing Social Security before his full retirement age of 67, he faces strict earnings caps; if his income exceeds $24,480 this year, the government withholds a portion of his benefits. This creates a trap where working more does not necessarily lead to greater financial stability. Having exhausted other options, he views his recent Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing as a necessary survival tactic rather than a defeat. For now, he continues the search, balancing the psychological toll of a stalled career against the practical necessity of earning enough to stay afloat.
