From Food Stamps to a $47.5 Million Exit

Ashley Tyrner-Dolce spent her pregnancy relying on government assistance after her husband left, yet she transformed a modest $3,000 investment in an ice cream truck into a massive healthcare venture, eventually selling her company, FarmboxRx, for $47.5 million and securing generational wealth for her daughter.

The path to success began with small-scale hustle. While living in Arizona, Tyrner-Dolce used an ice cream truck to generate enough capital to move to New York City. Once settled in the city, she identified a gap in the market: the lack of accessible, high-quality produce delivery. She launched a CSA-style box service, operating out of a cramped apartment while balancing the demands of single motherhood.

After eleven years of growth, the pandemic provided a critical turning point. Changes in federal regulations allowed insurance providers to offer food as a health benefit, prompting Tyrner-Dolce to pivot her business model from direct-to-consumer sales to a business-to-business approach. This shift aligned her company with the needs of health insurance providers, ultimately leading to the acquisition of FarmboxRx.

Now, the founder is focused on the legacy left for her 15-year-old daughter, Harlow. By ensuring her daughter held a significant portion of the company's stock, Tyrner-Dolce effectively secured her child's financial future. However, she remains adamant that the wealth, currently held in a trust, should not lead to entitlement. She expects her daughter to pursue meaningful work or artistic endeavors, prioritizing character over capital.
