The Cost of a Calling: When Passion Becomes a Burden

44 degrees Celsius in the Moroccan mountains, a broken-legged poodle in a Los Angeles vet clinic, and two women thousands of miles apart tethered by the same relentless cycle of nonprofit work. As a mother who raised her daughter to prioritize impact over income, I find myself questioning the legacy I built.

My daughter, Jordan, built the Souljourn Yoga Foundation from the ground up at 26, channeling her energy into global education for young women. I founded a rescue charity for dogs. We are both architects of our own missions, yet our lives are defined by the same chronic stress, financial instability, and the sleepless nights that come with chasing grants rather than paychecks. The mantra I instilled in her—to leave a footprint and prioritize others—was meant to spare her the guilt I felt growing up in apartheid South Africa, where my family chose to walk away rather than fight.

I watch her navigate the same exhaustion I carry, from the physical toll of our work to the constant anxiety over fiscal years and donor retention. While I cherish the moments of genuine change—the laughter of children in Sri Lanka or the recovery of a rescued dog like Romeo—these victories rarely translate into security. The world applauds our "angelic" sacrifices, but it fails to see the reality of five-hour nights and the heavy uncertainty of sustaining a mission on passion alone. I wonder if I traded her stability for a noble struggle, leaving us both to hold up our own heavens like Atlas, wondering if the weight is truly worth the cost.
