The layoffs primarily target the product and technology departments, moving the company toward a leaner structure despite its previous headcount of over 21,000 workers as of January. While restructuring charges will suppress operating margins through the end of the fiscal year, leadership insists the move is a tactical adjustment rather than a retreat. Workday shares have struggled, dropping 12% year-to-date amid broader investor anxiety regarding enterprise software.
This decision follows a turbulent period for the firm, which saw 400 employees cut in February and the subsequent departure of CEO Carl Eschenbach. Cofounder and executive chair Aneel Bhusri has since reclaimed the top role, maintaining a firm stance against market fears that generative AI will render enterprise software obsolete. Despite the "SaaSpocalypse" sentiment that previously wiped billions from the sector’s market value, Bhusri maintains that customers remain committed to Workday’s platform over internal alternatives.
