Leaving a $153,000 Salary for the Wilderness

Maria Sentmanat spent sixteen years building a fitness career, eventually landing a lucrative role directing one of the country's largest 5K races. Despite a six-figure salary and the prospect of an even higher paycheck, the 55-year-old Miami resident chose to walk away from it all to pursue a life without a steady income.

The decision to resign in August 2026 came after years of mounting stress that triggered deep-seated childhood trauma. Sentmanat describes a state of constant physical distress and "fight or flight" anxiety, even as her professional life appeared successful on paper. While her peers labeled the move reckless, she viewed it as a necessary step to reclaim her mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Sentmanat has since launched "Why Not Wild," a venture focused on personalized wilderness experiences in South Florida. By guiding participants through the Everglades or on motorcycle excursions, she aims to bridge the gap between people and nature. While she currently earns nothing and relies on strict savings, including proceeds from the sale of a home in Mount Dora, she emphasizes that the trade-off is worth the newfound sense of purpose. Her family, including her co-parenting ex-husband, supports the transition, viewing her departure from a high-pressure career as an act of personal courage rather than a financial failure.
