Redefining Success After a Decade in the Corporate Grind

A 15-year-old girl once saw a Burger King commercial and decided her life’s purpose was to climb the corporate ladder at Leo Burnett. Twenty years later, after navigating a decade-long career, multiple layoffs, and a challenging journey to motherhood, the author realized that her definition of success was someone else’s design.

For years, the author functioned as a classic rule-follower, managing multimillion-dollar marketing budgets and climbing from associate to director. The facade of stability shattered during a Thursday afternoon meeting when a restructuring led to a demand for a pay cut. Armed with a lawyer-reviewed severance letter, she walked away from a ten-year tenure, only to find that her career trajectory and her personal life were moving in opposite directions.

The shift in perspective arrived during maternity leave following an adoption process marked by seven previous miscarriages and stillbirths. Freed from the relentless cycle of deadlines and corporate hierarchies, she discovered an unfamiliar sense of peace. This realization deepened as she raised three sons, including two diagnosed with ADHD and autism. The demands of parenting neurodivergent children made the rigid structure of a traditional office incompatible with her reality.

Ultimately, she pivoted to independent consulting, trading the pursuit of a seat at a corporate table for a business built on flexibility. Today, success is no longer defined by promotions or brand budgets, but by the ability to attend IEP meetings and therapy sessions without seeking permission. Working from cars or docks, she has reclaimed her time, proving that the most important career pivot is the one that aligns with one's own life.
