SpaceX to Build Natural Gas Pipeline for Starship Operations

SpaceX plans to break ground on an eight-mile natural gas pipeline next month, a move designed to bypass the logistical bottleneck of relying on tanker trucks. Dubbed Starpipe, the infrastructure will supply liquid methane directly to the company’s Starbase facility to support an ambitious increase in flight frequency.

The project, detailed in filings with the Texas Railroad Commission by the SpaceX affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development, is expected to be operational by January 26. Currently, each Starship launch consumes roughly 630,000 gallons of liquid methane, a volume that necessitates an hours-long refueling process using hundreds of trucks. This method is incompatible with Elon Musk’s long-term goal of scaling from a handful of test flights to hundreds or even thousands of launches annually.

Beyond simple delivery, the pipeline represents a deeper shift toward vertical integration. Public records and statements from SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell indicate the company is exploring local drilling and processing operations to secure its own fuel supply. SpaceX has already secured over 100 oil and gas leases across Texas since 2023. While industry analysts note that energy production is outside the company's traditional expertise, the 16-inch diameter of the proposed pipeline suggests SpaceX is preparing for fuel demands that far exceed the Federal Aviation Administration's current limit of 25 launches per year. By controlling the supply chain from subterranean extraction to orbital launch, SpaceX aims to insulate its Starship program from the volatility of external energy markets.
