José Viñals
José Maria Viñals Íñiguez is a Spanish economist and businessman. He serves asGroup Chairman of Standard Charteredand Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank, the United Kingdom subsidiary of Standard Chartered.
José is Co-Chair of the United Nations’Alliance of Global Investors for Sustainable Development(GISD) and a board member of theInstitute of International Finance(IIF).
He is also a member of the board of directors of theBretton Woods Committee, member of theAdvisory Council of CityUK, member of theWorld Economic Forum’s Community of Chairpersons and board member of the Social Progress Initiative.
He has also held the positions of Chairman of theEuropean Central Bank International Relations Committee; and Chairman ofSpain’s Deposit Guarantee Funds.
He has been a member of: theBank for International Settlements (BIS) Committeeon the Global Financial System, the European Central Bank Monetary Policy Committee, and the high-level group appointed by the President of the European Commission to examine economic challenges in the European Union.
He was also a member of the European Union Economic and Financial Committee and a Board Member of the Spanish Securities Authority,the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from theUniversity of Valencia, a Master’s degree in Economics from theLondon School of Economics, and Master's and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Economics fromHarvard University. He is a former Faculty Member of the Economics Department atStanford University.
His awards include the Premio Rey Jaime I (King James I Prize) in Economics in 2001.
